Tips to strengthen our immune system

sistema inmunológico

A strong immune system is essential for maintaining good health and preventing disease, but it does not always function optimally. Factors such as chronic stress or poor nutrition can alter the immune response.

From a medical perspective, it is possible to assess the state of the immune system and apply personalized strategies that combine healthy lifestyle habits with specific treatments.

In this article, we explain how to strengthen the immune system in an effective and safe way. Keep reading!

What is the immune system?

The immune system is the body’s defense mechanism. It has the ability to defend itself from external threats, such as:

  1. Bacteria
  2. Viruses
  3. Protozoa
  4. Fungi
  5. Malignant cells

Therefore, our body protects itself through the immune system, which eliminates these threats and keeps us safe from harm. It acts as the shield of defense.

There are two types of immune systems:

    1. The nonspecific immune system, which defends against all types of threats.
    2. The specific immune system, which works against specific aggressions, and is linked to things like vaccinations.

Causes of a weakened immune system

There are many factors that can weaken the immune system:

Stress

Stress is one of the most significant factors contributing to a weakened immune system.

Chronic stress causes a decrease in the body’s defenses, which naturally leads to immune system impairment. This happens mainly because it triggers what is known as oxidative stress. Oxidative stress does have a positive role—it helps eliminate bacteria, viruses, parasites, cancer cells, or cells that have escaped mutagenic control. However, when it is sustained over a long period of time, it becomes harmful to the body.

The good news is that if we train and support our bodies properly, they have the ability to produce their own antioxidants, which help counteract excessive oxidative stress.

Lack of sleep

Our body needs rest in order to regenerate. It is during the night that our hormonal circadian system takes effect and activates the body’s repair processes.

For this reason, a lack of sleep and rest prevents proper regeneration. This results in an immune system that is not operating at full capacity and is therefore less able to defend against everyday external threats.

How can we strengthen our immune system?

Nutrition

Nutrition is essential. Providing our body with a diet rich in nutrients and free of toxins is fundamental for tissue regeneration and repair, among many other vital functions.

For this reason, poor nutrition can lead to several negative consequences, including a weakened immune system.

Hydration

Just like nutrition, proper hydration is key to maintaining good health. We need to stay well hydrated mainly to eliminate toxins through:

  1. The kidneys, which must function properly
  2. Breathing, through which we also eliminate toxins and which can lead to dehydration if we do not supply the body with enough water
  3. Our pores, when we perspire

In short, there are many mechanisms in the body that help eliminate toxins, but they all depend on adequate water intake to function properly.

Technologies and treatments to strengthen the immune system

When discussing treatments that help eliminate toxins from our body and improve the health of our immune system, we must mention plasmapheresis.

Plasmapheresis is an advanced medical technique that allows for the selective purification of blood plasma, the liquid fraction of the blood where toxins, metabolic byproducts, and inflammatory mediators accumulate. Through this procedure, it is possible to remove substances that the body is unable to eliminate effectively, helping to restore internal balance and optimize the immune system’s response.

This deep cleansing of the plasma has a positive impact on the overall well-being of the patient by improving cellular function, enhancing the effects of other regenerative medicine treatments, and reducing low-grade chronic inflammation.

We have two types of inflammation:

  1. “Good” inflammation: This is the type of inflammation that comes with pain and occurs, for example, when we get a bruise. It is considered “good” because it is an inflammatory process through which tissues are repaired.
  2. Chronic low-grade inflammation: However, when inflammation goes beyond its normal biological control, it results in chronic low-grade inflammation. This type of inflammation does not produce pain, swelling, or other visible symptoms, but we are internally inflamed. Over time, this can lead to aging and tissue degeneration, eventually resulting in a condition known as degenerative disease.
With plasmapheresis, we eliminate the macromolecules responsible for causing this chronic low-grade inflammatory process, which reduces chronic inflammation and improves overall health.
