Currently, centers like Clínica Planas offer their patients cutting-edge technology and expert professionals who ensure the safety of anesthesia during medical procedures. However, the fear of anesthesia is more common than it seems, even among women who want to increase their breast volume. In this post, we answer the question of whether it is possible to undergo breast augmentation without general anesthesia. Keep reading!
Is it possible to perform a breast augmentation without general anesthesia?
Today, it is indeed possible to perform a breast augmentation without the use of general anesthesia. This is thanks to years of research that have allowed the development of Mia Femtech™ technology, which adds volume and harmonizes the cleavage, using only local anesthesia and light sedation. This is the same approach applied, for example, during a gastroscopy or colonoscopy.
How does minimally invasive breast augmentation work?
Breast augmentation with the Mia® technique is a procedure in which we introduce an expander—something like an empty balloon—through a small incision in the armpit. This creates a space beneath the mammary gland.
Once this space is created, we remove the balloon after emptying it, and using a patented device, we inject a diamond-shaped implant specially designed for this technique. The unique feature of this implant is that it projects on both sides, allowing us to provide more volume with a smaller prosthesis.

Advantages of Breast Augmentation Without General Anesthesia
It is minimally invasive
There are several factors that allow us to state that Mia® is a minimally invasive procedure:
- It is of short duration.
- The scar is minimal.
- The scalpel does not touch the breast, and the surgeon does not work inside the breast; the implant is “shot” from the outside using a specially developed device.
- The anatomy of the breast and Cooper’s ligaments are not altered.
Quick Recovery
The postoperative period in the Mia® procedure is practically nonexistent. This is due to several factors, including the smaller size of the implant—smaller than in traditional breast augmentation—and the fact that no tissue-burning technique is used.
This means the tissue is not traumatized as much (as we always say, the scalpel does not touch the breast), which results in less edema and less inflammation. The benefit: a quicker return to normal life.
No General Anesthesia
As mentioned, the unique features of Femtech™ technology allow us to perform breast augmentation without general anesthesia. Only local anesthesia and light sedation are required; all of this is carefully monitored by an anesthesiology team to ensure the patient’s well-being.
Recovery Time
As with any aesthetic procedure, one of the main concerns of patients is the recovery time. Here is the Mia® experience:
No hospital stay
After the procedure, the patient remains in a private recovery room for about 90 minutes. Once this time has passed and any questions are addressed by the doctor, she can go home peacefully.
Return to routine
Most patients go home and can resume a comfortable life, which is completely normal starting from the same day of the procedure. This includes daily activities such as attending to their children, styling their hair, or getting dressed without assistance.
Regarding work life, in many cases, it is possible to return to work on the same day or the next day, as long as the job does not require physical effort, such as office work.
For jobs that involve physical tasks, such as lifting weight or using the arms extensively, a few days of rest may be required. The doctor will provide guidance on the appropriate rest time based on the individual case.
Physical exercise
Exercise is the activity that should be postponed the longest. It is necessary to wait at least three weeks to resume physical exercise, especially for impact sports. One month after the procedure, the patient is fully recovered.
Immediate Results
Another unique feature of Mia Femtech™ technology is that the results are visible almost immediately. This is because, being a conservative technique, the breast does not become as inflamed nor does it present the same level of edema as in traditional breast augmentation. The consequence is that the appearance of the breast right after the procedure is very similar to the final result.
There will be small changes over the days, but apart from the swelling caused by the infiltration, which occurs in the first few hours and is reabsorbed throughout the day, there is actually very little tissue inflammation.
