What does secondary preservation rhinoplasty involve?
The complexity of secondary rhinoplasty varies depending on each case.
It can address various problems, including:
1. Excessively sunken or prominent nasal dorsum
2. Disproportionately wide nasal bridge
3. Asymmetrical nasal tip
4. Deviated nasal bridge or nasal tip
Depending on the specific characteristics, the surgeon may opt for open or closed rhinoplasty to achieve the best results for the patient.
The closed rhinoplasty is performed through incisions inside the nostrils so that no external scars are visible.
Open rhinoplasty uses a small, strategic incision at the base of the columella to access the nasal structures. The resulting scar is typically extremely discreet and barely noticeable.
Before and after Secondary Rhinoplasty
Benefits of secondary rhinoplasty
The purpose of secondary rhinoplasty is primarily to improve the appearance of the nose, but in some cases it can also solve structural problems that affect respiratory function.
Improve the appearance of the nose
After an unsatisfactory first surgery, many patients experience distress and complexes for years. Secondary rhinoplasty provides a crucial opportunity to refine a previous result and deliver a nasal appearance that better aligns with the patient's goals. Success requires clear, honest communication between the patient and surgeon to define the limitations of the case and manage expectations effectively.
Improve the patient's breathing
Although secondary rhinoplasty is primarily aesthetic, it can also address functional problems. In cases where the patient has breathing difficulties, functional reconstruction can be performed to improve breathing.
Solve structural problems
Excessive cartilage resection during previous surgery may lead to structural problems. Secondary rhinoplasty may involve reconstructing the nose using cartilage grafts from the patient themselves (taken from the caudal septum, rib or ear). This enables us to:
- Restore volume
- The result is a beautiful nose achieved through optimal structure and firmness, positioning the angles perfectly.

Secondary rhinoplasty postoperative care
The recovery period is similar to that of conventional rhinoplasty. The splint is removed after approximately 6–7 days, the stitches fall out on their own in the case of open surgery, and in some cases, nasal plugs may be required, which are removed after 3 days. Postoperative care is crucial to ensure a successful recovery.

-

The results are visible after a week, when the splint is removed, but the swelling gradually subsides. After four months, approximately 90% of the inflammation has subsided, and the final result may take up to two years to fully manifest.

Who is eligible for secondary rhinoplasty?
Anyone who is aesthetically dissatisfied with a previous rhinoplasty and who, after consulting with a plastic surgeon, believes that secondary rhinoplasty can improve their nasal appearance and achieve the desired nose.
Expert opinion
A secondary rhinoplasty is performed on a patient who has already undergone one or more previous nasal surgeries. It is necessary to wait a year from the last surgery before accurately evaluating the case, and we only recommend it when we believe there is a real possibility of improving the aesthetic result, the respiratory function, or both.
