Integrative gynaecology consultation in Barcelona
At Clínica Planas, integrative gynaecology is another dimension in how we understand medicine. The main objective is to promote health and, failing that, to restore it. In other words, we study the person holistically, as a whole, without separating the organs and systems by their specialities. Furthermore, we do not overlook the relationship between a woman’s body and her mind. We thus involve the patient in decisions about her own health.
How do we achieve this? Proposing a medical history and a very detailed and thorough physical examination with the aim of identifying the source of the problem in order to find a solution. The patient must be aware of what is happening to her and why.

Gynaecological treatments
Treatments based on medical history and physical examination
To solve the problem or illness from the perspective of integrative gynaecology, there are different treatments based on the woman's medical history and a detailed physical examination.
1. The intestinal dysbiosis test: Examining the entire microbiota provides a wealth of information and the many causes of inflammation to be treated. When trying to conceive, this test provides us with a great deal of information because by knowing the state of the intestinal and endometrial microbiota (the inner layer of the uterus), we can improve the environment for the future embryo.
2. Detailed analysis: It helps us to ascertain the patient's overall state of health. Among other things, it allows us to see if there are any reactivated viruses, especially those of the Herpes family, which, once you have them, you pass on the infection and then they remain dormant in the body and can reactivate if the immune system is weakened. It is very important to know how to interpret test results because they enable us to detect current or future illnesses.
3. Lymphocyte typing: This test provides a wealth of information to patients with a weakened immune system, e.g., how their immune system is functioning, including how well it handles infection, or if the condition is becoming chronic, or even if the immune system is unable to fight it off.
4. Urine analysis: It is very useful for determining the exact origin of the problem or illness.
Treatments for health and ageing
These treatments involve the patient. Nutrition is key and fundamental, as are physical exercise (tailored to each woman's needs) and mental well-being (meditation, relaxation, etc.), because stress is a major contributor to inflammation, which is the root cause of many problems.
The primary goal is to address existing problems and subsequently establish conditions that prevent their recurrence. For example, if there is intestinal inflammation, the first step is to eliminate any parasites or candida. The stomach's pH is subsequently measured to confirm its correct acidity, which is crucial for the effective operation of the primary defence mechanism. A strong immune system can only be built from a threefold approach: optimised food digestion, effective digestive enzymes, and a diverse gut microbiome. In short, it is a multidisciplinary and highly integrative approach to getting to the root of the problem.

How often should I have a gynaecological check-up?
Generally, if you are in good health and do not have any problems or illnesses that could affect the proper functioning of your body, it is recommended that you have a gynaecological check-up once a year. Integrative gynaecology prioritises prevention over cure, recognising that dysfunction precedes pathology. The goal is to resolve these underlying dysfunctions to prevent the development of full-blown diseases. That is why at Clínica Planas we have this integrative gynaecology unit in Barcelona, because prevention is very important and the sooner a problem is detected, the sooner it can be solved and the less likely it is to cause major problems in the future.

What is integrative gynaecology?
Integrative gynaecology is about treating women as unique beings, with their own genetics, epigenetics, environment and habits. Therefore, not everything works for everyone. Probably, every problem or disease has genetic components that cause them, but epigenetics (our surroundings, the environment) is much more important, and that is something we can influence and manipulate to our advantage.
Therefore, it is important for patients to be aware of their own health because this will allow us to modify their behaviours and habits, which are often deeply ingrained and can sometimes be harmful to them.
Our goal at Clínica Planas is to empower patients to understand and articulate their specific needs based on their corresponding stage of life, because treatment approaches differ for a young woman, one who wants to become pregnant, or even a woman going through menopause.
We address existing problems, but we also equip women with the necessary tools, such as changes in habits and diet, to prevent relapses and enable them to fully appreciate each stage of their lives.
Our ultimate goal is to identify the problem and help the woman resolve it thanks to our medical knowledge and clinical experience. -
What are the differences between gynaecological consultations and integrative gynaecological consultations?
The main difference between conventional gynaecology and integrative gynaecology is that integrative gynaecology seeks to identify the root cause of the problem in order to find a solution. For example, if you have period pain, conventional gynaecology would prescribe contraceptives, but integrative gynaecology would look for the cause of the pain so that it can be relieved. With integrative gynaecology, we examine the entire neuroendocrine system responsible for the hormonal component, never overlooking our immune system, which makes up our defences, integrating the emotional system that modulates our entire organism.
The approach involves a comprehensive study, focusing on discovering the underlying problem rather than simply managing symptoms, leading to truly effective and sustained treatment.
Conventional gynaecology operates on the premise that a specific condition receives uniform treatment across all patients; however, developments in the field point towards customising therapeutic approaches for each woman. -
When should I see an integrative gynaecologist?
Integrative gynaecology can treat different stages of a woman's life: 1. Adolescence
2. Youth
3. Pregnancy
4. Adulthood
5. and menopause
From an integrative perspective, everything can be addressed, but the most common cases are:
1. Hormonal issues (menstrual disorders)
2. Vaginal infections (urinary and recurrent)
3. Polycystic ovary syndrome
4. Endometriosis
5. Autoimmune diseases
6. Painful sexual intercourse
7. Fertility
8. Vaginal dryness -
What problems can an integrative gynaecologist solve?
As explained in the previous section, a specialist in integrative gynaecology can treat all problems or illnesses that arise during the different stages of a woman's life. The most common are:
1. Vaginal infections
2. Menstrual disorders
3. Endometriosis
4. Polycystic ovary syndrome
5. Autoimmune diseases
All these diseases can be prevented and improved by observing the woman's microbiota, which is often the basis and origin of the vast majority of problems.
Premenstrual syndrome, which often involves an inflammatory element, is frequently treated, and patients show noticeable improvement when their inflammation is addressed.
Fertility is also a problem that many women seek consultation for and, from an integrative gynaecology perspective, can be helpful because if a woman is trying to conceive, it is ideal for her to be in the best possible psychoneuroimmunological and endocrinological condition, as this will increase the chances of successfully becoming pregnant and the future development of the baby.
It has been observed that the origin of the baby's gut microbiota lies in the mother's microbiota, so if the mother's microbiota is altered, it is very likely that the baby's will be too. Furthermore, depending on the woman's condition when she becomes pregnant, this can affect the health of the unborn baby, which is why pre-conception visits are so important, as it is essential to look after your health from the moment the baby is in the womb.
A specialist in integrative gynaecology can also solve the problem of vaginal dryness. A stronger immune system means less inflammation. Combining supplements like Omega 3 and Omega 7 with laser treatment helps keep the vaginal mucosa hydrated, and a multidisciplinary and complementary treatment will lead to a significantly healthier woman.
