Have you ever Googled: “Is it normal for my labia to stick out so much?” "How can I conceal them when wearing tight-fitting clothes or a bikini?" "Is my vulva normal?"
What is labiaplasty?
This procedure involves reducing the size of the inner labia and the clitoral hood.
This involves shaping the labia; in other words, sculpting the vulva by hand to give it a harmonious shape.
In addition to trimming away excess skin, we will harmonise its shape, taking into account its functionality.
With regard to the functionality of the vulva, there are three points to bear in mind:
- 1. Precision when performing surgery. Care must be taken to ensure that the labia are small enough, but with sufficient tissue to close the entrance to the vagina.
- Delicacy so that the clitoral hood is mobile.
- 3. Removing too much skin from the hood is ill-advised, given the potential for clitoral exposure and subsequent significant pain.
Es necesaria una visión artística para poder diseñar una cirugía que armonice toda la vulva.

What does labiaplasty involve?
Labia surgery is also known as labiaplasty and is a surgical procedure that involves reducing the size of the labia minora or inner lips of the vulva.
Many women have very large labia, and this is something that happens from adolescence onwards because a woman is born with the vulva she will have for the rest of her life. However, during adolescence, this changes and the lips grow due to hormonal activity, causing, in some cases, the labia minora or inner lips to protrude beyond the line of the labia majora. This can cause discomfort and inconvenience, as well as being an aesthetic problem and making them dislike their vulva, so they seek a solution: labiaplasty.
As mentioned above, labiaplasty surgery involves trimming the protruding labia that cause discomfort.
Our medical specialists at Clínica Planas focus on:
1. Reducing the size of the inner labia
2. Harmonising the vulva, something that sets us apart from the rest
That is why it is very important when a woman decides to undergo labiaplasty to also assess the clitoral hood, because in the vast majority of cases there is duplication or excess skin on the clitoris, and it is essential to address everything at the same time.
Therefore, at Clínica Planas, we strive to ensure that the objective of this surgery goes beyond merely removing excess inner labial skin, as it also entails enhancing the beauty and functionality of the vulva, because these labia have a key role of providing a barrier to the vagina. It is consequently indispensable that they are preserved during surgery and not trimmed too much in order to prevent significant complications.
Furthermore, it is very important that medical specialists have sufficient experience in labiaplasty to achieve optimal results. Neither gynaecologists nor plastic surgeons receive training during their specialisation to perform this type of surgery correctly, which is why it is so important to put yourself in the hands of someone who has been specifically trained and has extensive experience.
Before and after labiaplasty
Inner labia surgery unquestionably transforms not just women's vulvas but also their entire lives. When a woman is unhappy with her vulva, whether due to aesthetic or functional issues, and changes its appearance, she feels more confident and happier.
Because the before and after of labiaplasty is not just a purely physical issue, self-esteem is very important when it comes to relationships because, by being happy with their vulva, their self-confidence increases and makes them enjoy these relationships more.
Furthermore, one of the things that most concerns women when undergoing labiaplasty is whether they will lose sensitivity during sexual intercourse. This is not the case at all, because the clitoris is not touched.

What is labioplasty?
Labiaplasty, as previously defined, is the reduction of the inner labia of the vulva, without amputating or cutting them excessively and, when necessary, as in most cases, the reduction of the clitoral hood. Everything must be assessed as a whole because the labia are attached to the hood, and it is essential to do this in the same operation to avoid future problems.

How is this intervention performed?
We conduct this surgery at Clínica Planas with a laser, an incredibly versatile device that renders less bleeding, as cutting and coagulating occurs concurrently. It also reduces pain and inflammatory reactions. Furthermore, what sets us apart from others is that we administer regional anaesthesia instead of direct anaesthesia to the labia, which gives us two advantages: 1. Direct anaesthesia entails a risk of distorting labial anatomy, whereas regional anaesthesia bears no risk.
2. Postoperative pain management. Two local anaesthetics are given to ensure alleviation of the most intense pain, typically within the first 12 hours following surgery, which leaves only slight discomfort and tingling, but no pain. -
What are the different types of labia surgery?
There are different techniques used to perform labiaplasty, but ultimately each surgery is unique because each vulva is unique. At Clínica Planas, we always strive for the best and most advanced techniques so that our patients achieve the best possible results. That is why we use laser technology, which allows us to perform safe surgery with fewer risks.

What should be taken into account during the postoperative period?
Labiaplasty is a surgery that has very few risks, the only one being bleeding. To avoid this, it is recommended to rest and apply ice to the area for 48 hours after the operation. Tablets will also be provided to reduce the risk of bleeding. In addition, during the postoperative period, it is necessary to lead a quiet life, but after a week, you can return to your normal routine, except for sexual intercourse or stimulation of the area, which can be resumed one month after the operation.

What is augmentation labiaplasty?
In short, augmentation labiaplasty involves enlarging the labia majora (not the labia minora or inner lips, but the outer ones), and this increase is achieved using hyaluronic acid or fat. Most women who undergo this procedure do so to harmonise, close the vulva and give it volume.
Expert opinion
When a woman has large inner labia and does not like them, she does not only have a cosmetic problem, she has a problem that affects many aspects of her life, including sexual function. Labiaplasty surgery is a low-risk procedure that achieves spectacular immediate results. It is extremely important to take a comprehensive approach, work on the clitoral hood, seek the greatest possible symmetry and, above all, respect its function. As most women say, ‘the only thing you'll regret is not having done it sooner’.
