What is NAD+ and why is it vital for your body?
NAD+ is a coenzyme that our body continuously produces and that is essential for cellular energy production. It plays a direct role in the Krebs cycle—the process through which cells generate the energy they need to function—and is therefore a fundamental molecule for life.
All humans naturally produce NAD+. Under normal conditions, its levels remain stable and are primarily used to sustain cellular energy production. However, when the body needs to repair itself—following an injury, infection, or internal imbalance—it consumes NAD+ at an accelerated rate to support these regeneration processes. At that point, NAD+ levels may decline, compromising the body's ability to function optimally.

Combined Treatment: The Synergistic Power of NAD+ and Hyperbaric Oxygen
How does NAD+ therapy with hyperbaric oxygen work?
The combination of NAD+ and hyperbaric oxygen acts directly on the mitochondria, the organelles responsible for producing energy within every cell. To perform their function, mitochondria require two essential elements: oxygen and NAD+.
The hyperbaric chamber ensures that oxygen reaches all body tissues in high concentrations, while NAD+ administration provides the coenzyme required for the mitochondria to complete the energy production cycle. These two therapies complement and enhance each other, creating the optimal conditions for cells to function at their full potential.
In addition to its role in energy production, NAD+ is essential for preventing cells from entering a state of senescence—often referred to as "zombie cells"—and for activating the body's natural DNA and RNA repair mechanisms. Whenever the body needs to repair damaged tissues, this molecule plays an indispensable role.
Key benefits of combining both therapies
At Clínica Planas, we assess each patient's NAD+ levels before starting treatment. NAD+ is only administered when a genuine deficiency is identified, as both excessive and insufficient levels can be harmful. The correct dose provides therapeutic benefits, while an inappropriate dose may be ineffective or even counterproductive.
When NAD+ levels are below optimal, combining NAD+ therapy with hyperbaric oxygen offers clear and measurable benefits:
- Increased energy and vitality by restoring the mitochondria's ability to produce energy efficiently.
- Faster tissue repair, particularly in chronic diseases, injuries, or cellular dysfunction.
- Reduced brain fog, improving mental clarity, focus, and concentration.
- Optimised overall health by simultaneously addressing cellular oxygenation and energy balance.
Who is this treatment recommended for?
This treatment is particularly suitable for people experiencing:
- Chronic fatigue or persistent tiredness with no apparent cause.
- Muscle weakness or loss of strength.
- Slow recovery following injuries or illnesses.
- Brain fog or difficulty concentrating.
In these situations, restoring NAD+ levels and improving cellular oxygenation is an essential first step. Without correcting these underlying deficiencies, the effectiveness of any subsequent treatment may be significantly reduced.
Each treatment protocol is tailored to the individual patient based on a clinical assessment and laboratory measurement of NAD+ levels.
F.A.Q.
-
Does NAD+ have any contraindications or side effects?
Like any biologically active molecule, NAD+ may cause adverse effects if administered in an incorrect dose. Excessive amounts can be toxic to the body, while an insufficient dose will not achieve the desired therapeutic effect.
For this reason, Clínica Planas measures NAD+ levels through laboratory testing before prescribing treatment. This allows us to determine the appropriate dose for each patient, ensuring both safety and effectiveness. -
How many sessions are needed before noticing the effects?
The number of sessions depends on the method of administration and each patient's condition.
- Hyperbaric oxygen therapy: A minimum of ten sessions is generally recommended to achieve significant benefits.
- Intravenous NAD+: When NAD+ levels are severely depleted and rapid replenishment is required, one to three intravenous infusion sessions are usually sufficient.
- Oral NAD+ (NMN): When there is no severe deficiency, we recommend supplementation with NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), the form that the body can readily absorb and use to synthesise NAD+.
-
Can I combine NAD+ with supplements such as Resveratrol?
Yes. NAD+ treatment is compatible with other supplements and micronutrients that may also be deficient, such as resveratrol, vitamin D, or vitamin K. The supplementation protocol is designed individually according to each patient's laboratory results and specific nutritional needs.
