Concern for how our physical appearance has acquired particular importance over the last few years. A perfect figure and a good state of health can be achieved by leading a healthy life, with a suitable diet and regular physical exercise. However, there may be some localized accumulations of fat that are difficult to eradicate. In order to get rid of these effectively and permanently, a surgical technique known as liposuction is used. The appearance of accumulations of fat in certain areas of the body is quite common. They are normally located in the abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs and knees; although they sometimes form under the chin or at the back of the arms.

Liposuction is a surgical technique that eliminates excess fat by sucking it out from different points through fine tubes.

The extracted fat does not reappear since fat cells stop reproducing after puberty. Liposuction therefore eliminates a fixed number of adipocytes that are not reproduced, achieving permanent results.

The stay at the clinic may be anything up to 24 hours, but there is no need for hospitalisation when only small areas are to be treated.

The operation can be carried out under local, regional or general anesthesia, depending on the areas to be treated.

Preoperative recommendations

Before the operation the patient is examined and questioned thoroughly to provide a complete medical record, which will include important data such as the zones to be treated, skin quality and the presence of stretch marks.

For approximately a month after the operation, a compression garment needs to be worn and massages of the treated area are required to optimize recovery.

Liposuction can remove fat deposits from certain areas of the body that are not eliminated even with regular exercise and a balanced diet. This technique owes its popularity to its high effectiveness. The extracted fat does not appear again since fat cells stop reproduction at the end of puberty. With liposuction a significant decrease of volume is achieved and an there is an excellent improvement in body contour. The results may be permanent, provided that a few healthy eating habits are followed and regular exercise is practiced.

It must be clear that liposuction is not a treatment for weight loss but a method to improve body contour. Besides getting the desired contour, the patient knows that a permanent result has achieved, since the extracted fat cells will not reproduce any more. If we increase weight later, the body will gain new kilos, but they will be distributed throughout the body, without changing the areas treated by liposuction.

By sucking out the localized fat remaining in the area of the body you want to modify, the contour and body’s silhouette is really improved. Most of the patients who undergo this treatment are very satisfied with the results achieved.
