What is the POSE method?
At Clínica Planas, we offer several methods aimed at patients with obesity who need to lose weight for health reasons.
Through careful clinical assessment, we evaluate each person
individually and personally and determine which is the most suitable.
One is the POSE (Primary Obesity Surgery Endoluminal) method. This is a non-surgical technique for stomach reduction that is performed endoscopically.
This procedure is indicated for patients with varying degrees of obesity, but primarily for individuals with Class I obesity or initial stages of Class II obesity. It is also an option for patients who are candidates for intragastric balloon treatment based on their BMI but who, for various medical reasons or personal reasons, cannot have the balloon fitted.
Unlike gastric balloons, the POSE method is irreversible, meaning it remains in place for life.

What does the procedure involve?
The POSE method is performed using an endoscopic procedure, administered orally.
- No surgery required
- It leaves no scars
- Minimally invasive procedure
The procedure consists of performing 12 gastric plications or folds that will permanently reduce the capacity or size of the stomach by 25–30%.
Weight loss will vary depending on each patient's adherence to the programme of changes proposed by our multidisciplinary unit, but we could achieve losses of between 15–18%.
The procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis, but for better recovery and patient care:
- The procedure is carried out with just a few hours of admission; the current trend is to remain in the clinic for around 12 hours.
- Our nursing team will be available to the patient at all times.
Benefits of the POSE method
The main benefit of the POSE Method is to reduce the stomach; and from there, control weight and integrate health as a lifestyle habit.
With the help of our multidisciplinary team, by naturally adopting healthy habits, patients will consolidate their weight loss.
- Aesthetic. Unhealthy eating is directly linked to low self-esteem. By improving their relationship with their body, patients gain confidence and are able to acquire tools to improve their connection with a balanced diet and exercise.
- Health. When obesity is present, we are talking about a disease, and this is always associated with risk factors: cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disorders (osteoarthritis), and certain types of cancer. Therefore, when losing weight, it is essential to modify eating habits and assimilate the recommendations that our team may suggest during the 2-year follow-up period.
- 24-month follow-up to modify eating irregularities and sedentary lifestyles and to assimilate and learn how to maintain healthy habits over time. To achieve this, our offer includes:
- Personal trainer. Physical activity is part of our interdisciplinary approach. Our physical fitness coaches assist patients in everything that can help them develop a responsible mind-body relationship.
- Team of psychologists. Poor eating habits leave a mark of emotional distress that often fuels low self-esteem. Our therapeutic team supports patients and provides them with tools to feel good about themselves.
- Study of resting metabolism. Based on the results of this test, patients learn which foods their bodies burn most easily, enabling them to quantify the specific amount of fat, carbohydrates, or protein their bodies need.
- Gas stress test. The results of this test are used to define a personalised training routine that allows for increased fat loss while maintaining and improving muscle structure, always supervised by our medical team and personal trainer.

Preoperative
Not all patients with obesity are eligible for the POSE method. Our team of specialists will personally assess which type of procedure is best suited to each patient.
As with all bariatric endoscopies, it is essential to undergo a prior medical examination to detect any possible causes that could contraindicate the procedure.
Before the procedure, our medical and nutritional team will
provide you with simple instructions and recommendations to follow:
- Liquid diet 72 hours prior to the procedure
- Taking a gastric protector one week in advance.
- Come on an empty stomach and accompanied by someone you trust
Stomach reduction postoperative stage
After the procedure, which lasts between 30 and 45 minutes, the patient will remain in hospital overnight.
After the procedure, our multidisciplinary team will explain the usual associated symptoms and how to manage them correctly, but this is a postoperative period that is very well tolerated by most of our patients.
At Clínica Planas, we will provide a medication regimen to alleviate these symptoms during the first few hours. Once those days have passed, the procedure is highly tolerable.

Yes, the POSE Method is compatible with other techniques. This procedure does not contraindicate other surgery should it be necessary.

What is the dual mechanism of the POSE Method for weight reduction?
On the one hand, stomach capacity is limited thanks to a 20–30% reduction with the 12 plications, and gastric emptying is also slowed down. However, there are also hormonal changes that decrease overall appetite.
