Storage and conservation of adult stem cells for future applications in regenerative medicine.

Adipose tissue or fat is a rich source of adult stem cells. Although fat has traditionally been treated as a waste product in liposuctions and other surgeries, since its high content in stem cells is known, fat cryopreservation is a reservoir of stem cells for a possible autologous use in the future, in many pathologies that today are already treated with this type of cells.

Clínica Planas is the first accredited centre for storage and conservation of stem cells for future application. It has an agreement with the first adult stem cell bank, authorized by the National Transplantation Organization (ONT).

Why is interesting to keep stem cells?

Just like wrinkles or grey hair are signs of aging, stem cells also age and lose potential with age. For this reason, they should be stored as soon as possible in order to have a biological material as young as possible. By freezing the cells at -196ºC, we succeed in stopping their biological age and, consequently, their aging. This fact impacts positively on their regenerative capacities and today, can treat many pathologies.

How these stem cells are obtained?

Obtaining adult stem cells is simple and fast by a simple abdominal liposuction. This completely painless removal for the patient is carried out in the operating room, where this tissue is obtained and sent to the bank for preservation.

Cells can be stored indefinitely because by keeping them frozen at -196ºC, we stop aging. One of the advantages is that these cells do not generate any rejection for the patient in case of future treatments because they are his/her own ones.



We have different treatments based on our unit of regenerative medicine, depending on the injury, in order to improve the patient’s quality of life.


The combination of plasma rich in growth factors and mesenchymal stem cells from adipose tissue improves not only the skin wound healing process, but also the aesthetic appearance of the scar; improving its color and thickness.

The combination of both therapies achieves better results both in the aesthetic appearance and its antiinflammatory potential.

Facial mesotherapy (facial rejuvenation)

Mesenchymal stem cells are applied in facial rejuvenation to prevent and/or correct all type of wrinkles, from the thinnest to the deepest, and to redensify the damaged tissue due to the natural process as time goes on.

Cellular Therapy with mesenchymal stem cells for facial rejuvenation is an innovative treatment, which guarantees the best medium and long-term results. Unlike other synthetic fillers that are reabsorbed in the short term, stem cells have the ability to differentiate and create millions of new cells that redensify the tissue in a natural way to give the skin the luminosity and tonicity of youth. Besides, there is no risk of rejection since it is an autologous material of the same patient.

Mesenchymal stem cells are obtained from fat by a small liposuction with local anaesthesia. A small amount of fat is removed and sent to the accredited laboratory for further treatment and proliferation.
For each facial rejuvenation treatment, about twenty million stem cells are injected subcutaneously by mesotherapy. Then, they produce themselves collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid - substances responsible for the tissues elasticity and tonicity-.

Cells obtained from the adipose tissue are able to differentiate in cells of the different tissues, among which are those of the locomotor system (bone, cartilage, tendon and muscle).


- They are obtained from the adipose tissue by an outpatient liposuction of abdominal fat.
- They have the capacity of tissue regeneration and inflammatory reduction, achieving damage repair in many cases.
- Cells are removed and reinjected into the injured area in order to help the body heal the affected area by avoiding more aggressive treatments.
- They have a great therapeutic potential and are used for healing musculo-skeletal injuries.

In which pathologies of the locomotor system can the mesenchymal cells be indicated?
Current indications are joint cartilage injuries (osteoarthritis, chondromalacia patellae), tendinous lesions (rotator cuff lesions, patellar tendon, epicondylitis), meniscal lesions, LCA lesions, etc.


The treatment with platelet-rich plasma consists of using a small amount of the patient’s blood, and separate blood from plasma, where the highest concentration of platelets is in order to enhance their regenerative function. Thus, taking advantage of the properties of platelet proteins and blood plasma produced by the body itself, we regenerate and repair damaged tissues.

It is a minimally invasive technique that is performed on an outpatient basis. A small amount of blood, similar to a common blood test, is drawn. This blood undergoes a centrifugation process that allows separating the richer fraction in platelets, which contains the Growth Factors and proteins.

Then, the richer part of growth factors is separated (the rest is discarded), and injected directly into the injured joint or muscle.
