Does Not Wearing a Bra Cause the Breasts to Sag?

In recent years, more and more women are choosing the option of not wearing a bra regularly, with the aim of increasing comfort and, in some cases, as a form of feminist liberation.

Many women considering this option have a common question: Will my breasts sag? Keep reading if you want to learn about the effects of not wearing a bra and in which cases it is not recommended.

The Braless Fashion

Although in recent years we have seen a boom in the braless fashion, back in the 90s, we already saw major celebrities advocating for the option of not wearing a bra. Models like Kate Moss and actresses such as Jennifer Aniston or Sarah Jessica Parker were seen in public wearing clothes that clearly showed the omission of this intimate garment.

Today, in the pursuit of comfort, naturalness, and the right to choose, more and more women are opting to go without a bra in their daily lives.

Does not wearing a bra cause the breasts to sag?

There is no answer that applies to every woman.

Not wearing a bra does not automatically mean the breasts will sag; this depends on several factors:

  1. For example, depending on the breast tissue, wearing a bra can help keep the breasts in place over time. This is especially true for patients with thin skin or stretch marks because their breasts developed quickly or increased in size due to pregnancy.

  1. This also applies to women with large breasts, as large breasts translate into more weight. In this case, not wearing a bra may indeed lead to sagging.

Although we can identify cases where wearing a bra is especially recommended, such as in women with large breasts or with very thin or low-quality tissue, the general recommendation from plastic surgeons is not to completely rule out wearing a bra regularly.

Are there benefits to not wearing a bra?

The main benefit of not wearing a bra is the comfort and sense of freedom it provides for many women. It’s important to keep in mind that every woman is unique, as is her perception of comfort. Some patients tell us that they find underwire bras uncomfortable, while others don’t feel comfortable walking around or working without a bra or feeling their clothes directly on their nipples.

The Effects of Not Wearing a Bra

Sagging of the Breasts
Breast sagging is considered when, proportionally to the position of the breast on the chest, the gland is resting below its inframammary fold. In this case, we are talking about ptosis—a breast droop—and it can be categorized into different grades depending on the severity of the case.

It is also possible that there is, in addition, a low nipple position. We may find patients with a correct nipple position and pseudoptosis—a drooping of the gland—or patients with a low nipple position in relation to the inframammary fold.

Wearing a bra regularly—even if it can be omitted occasionally—helps prevent the development of ptosis or pseudoptosis.

Bra Use and Breast Surgery

There are certain times, such as after breast surgery, when plastic surgeons recommend wearing a bra, as it acts as a type of bandage that protects the breasts after the procedure.

Depending on the case, a sports bra or, in some specific cases, an underwired bra is recommended. These types of bras are considered an aid in achieving the expected final result.

Once the result has stabilized—usually between 6 months and 1 year after surgery—the patient can decide not to wear a bra.

In any case, it is important to know that, depending on the quality of the skin and tissue before surgery, the breasts may have a tendency to sag without proper support.

Sports Protection

Engaging in physical activity is another scenario in which wearing a bra is recommended for almost every woman, except for those cases where breast volume is very small.

Whether it’s aerobic or high-impact sports that involve jumping, wearing a sports bra will not only protect the breasts but, in cases of heavier breasts, will also help prevent potential injuries in the neck, back, and trapezius area.

Comfort

As mentioned earlier, comfort in wearing or not wearing a bra is entirely subjective. While many women find going braless comfortable and liberating, others miss the comfort and coverage of a bra.

It is the woman herself, with all this information about the consequences of not wearing a bra, who should decide what makes her feel most comfortable at all levels.
