Gynaecological check-up
Annual gynaecological check-ups are recommended, especially when sexual activity begins. It is not necessary beforehand, unless there is a problem; for example:
1. Not having a period at 16 or 17 years old
2. Pain
3. Very heavy bleeding
The aim of our gynaecologists at Clínica Planas is to carry out a complete examination of the female reproductive system.
The first step is to complete the woman's medical history to ascertain previous illnesses, normal menstruation characteristics, and address any issues or complaints.
The patient is then brought into the examination area to examine the vulva. Initially, this is done visually and then by palpation, ruling out anything unusual, checking for white patches that could be a sign of lichen, and verifying that the clitoral hood is normal and mobile.
Once the vulva has been examined, the speculum is inserted into the vagina—this is not painful if the woman is relaxed and calm—and then opened to take a sample of cells from the cervix—a smear test—using a spatula and a brush. This sample is placed on a glass slide and sent to the laboratory for analysis. This is what we use to detect and prevent cervical cancer, because cytology can diagnose lesions long before they become visible.
Next, an ultrasound scan is performed to examine the shape and size of the uterus and ovaries, checking for abnormalities.
Finally, once the vaginal examination is complete, a breast examination is performed: the four quadrants of the breasts and armpits.
Regular self-examination of both the breasts and vulva is crucial, as it aids in the early diagnosis of various diseases and thus seek medical attention if any abnormalities are observed.
Our gynaecology treatments
The specialists working in our Gynaecology Unit at Clínica Planas provide a wide range of treatments to help women solve whatever problem they may have.
For example, surgery would be the solution to remove a polyp in the uterus or cysts on the ovaries.
When there is vaginal yeast infection or candidiasis, the most important thing is to make a proper diagnosis based on a normal culture. If there are any doubts, specific cultures are performed to examine the entire vaginal flora in depth.
Depending on the state of the vaginal microbiota, specific treatments are recommended to restore the vaginal flora.
There are also different treatments used when there is pain during sexual intercourse, such as:
1. Radiofrequency
2. Laser
3. Skin regeneration treatment
4. Injections with substances that block muscle contractions
We can also treat urinary incontinence, a prevalent issue among women, through laser therapy or an electromagnetism chair.
In short, we offer a wide variety of treatments to improve or cure the most common problems, and our team of specialists will recommend the best treatment for each woman based on the problem to be treated.
F.A.Q.
-
What is the first visit to the gynaecologist like?
During the first gynaecological consultation, the woman is first asked about her general and family history, whether she has any allergies, previous surgeries, when she started menstruating, whether she has regular periods, whether she has had any pregnancies and births... In short, the woman's medical history is taken to see how her life has been. The patient is then taken into the examination area, where the vulva is examined first, followed by a smear test (taking samples of cells from the uterus). At Clínica Planas, we use one of the smallest speculums available to perform cytology tests, so as not to cause any discomfort to the woman. The smear test is followed by a vaginal ultrasound scan, though for patients who have not yet had sexual intercourse, an abdominal ultrasound scan is performed).
And finally, a breast examination. -
What is the right age to go for the first check-up?
Ideally, a woman should start visiting the gynaecologist when she becomes sexually active. However, you should go sooner if you experience problems such as absence of menstruation, heavy bleeding, pain, etc.
-
How often should I get a gynaecological check-up?
We recommend yearly gynaecological check-ups, since once a year should suffice to both diagnose and prevent problems. In addition to this, information will also be provided on the changes women will undergo throughout their lives.
-
What is the difference between gynaecology and obstetrics?
Obstetrics is the branch of medicine that deals with everything related to pregnancy: childbirth, ultrasounds, etc. And gynaecology deals with the female reproductive organs when a woman is not pregnant, which is basically most of her life.
-
How should I prepare before a gynaecologist visit?
No special preparation is necessary before a gynaecologist visit.
Expert opinion
A gynaecology consultation is a special consultation and differs from other medical specialities. It is a safe, open and honest space where women can feel free to discuss many things that they might not talk about with almost anyone else. In addition to answering questions, our focus is also on prevention and treating gynaecological problems that may arise throughout all stages of a woman’s life. We are here to support women in everything.
