Every body is different. Some people have more volume in their legs, others have broader backs, while some have a less defined waist. Do you identify with the latter and wish your waist were more defined? Today, it is possible to achieve waist reduction using a minimally invasive technique, without the need for a hospital stay. How does it work? We explain everything in this article.
How can we reduce waist size?
The main objective of waist reduction, as the name suggests, is to reduce the circumference of the waist.
In the past, corsets were used for this purpose, although they had the disadvantage of deforming the rib cage and were not considered particularly safe. Today, however, we use a minimally invasive technique that involves repositioning the floating ribs. These ribs are not fixed and do not play a direct role in breathing, but they help protect certain organs.
By preserving these ribs rather than removing them, and simply reshaping their position, it is possible to change the appearance of the waist, making it look narrower and more defined.
An hourglass figure can be achieved by combining this procedure with the use of a corset under medical supervision, helping to create a more pronounced, narrow waist.
What are the benefits of waist reduction?
Sometimes, achieving a slimmer waist is not possible through diet, exercise or even liposuction because the underlying muscle or bone structure does not allow it. However, this minimally invasive technique offers an alternative approach to waist reshaping without compromising the body’s functional integrity.
Repositioning the floating ribs is a relatively short procedure that does not generally require medical leave and is designed to preserve the body’s normal function, allowing patients to return to their usual activities afterwards.
Once the floating rib reshaping procedure has been completed, a corset must be worn for three months.
The degree of waist reduction will depend on each individual. Some people are concerned about achieving an overly artificial or dramatically defined waist. In these cases, the corset will not be tightened as much during the three-month period as it would be for patients seeking a more pronounced result, with a reduction of up to approximately 10 centimetres.

Can I choose how defined I want my waist to be?
Everyone has different preferences. Some people would like an extremely defined waist, while others prefer a more moderate result.
This technique is fully customisable, as a significant part of the final result depends on you and how consistently you wear the corset.
If you want a dramatically sculpted and highly defined waist, you will need to wear the corset 24 hours a day for three months following the floating rib reshaping procedure.
Progressive adjustments should begin after the first two weeks, gradually working towards a reduction of more than 10 centimetres so that, once the corset is removed, the desired waist definition has been achieved.
If, on the other hand, you prefer a more moderate waist reduction, the corset must still be worn for the three months following the procedure, but with less intensive adjustments.
First steps towards a more defined waist
Are you considering waist reduction but unsure whether you are a suitable candidate?
The first requirement is that you genuinely want a more defined waist, have no serious underlying health conditions and, importantly, do not have significant excess fat around the waist. If you do have localised fat deposits in this area, other treatments are available to address them.
At Clínica Planas, we offer a free initial assessment.
Our team of specialists will assess your individual case. If further investigation is needed or surgery is being planned, a CT scan may be recommended to examine the condition and dimensions of your floating ribs.
Based on these findings, we will establish a personalised treatment plan tailored to your anatomy and desired results.
